Teh Tarik Football » Laos 1-4 Malaysia: Eye of a Tiger

Posted: 29 Nov 2012 12:14 AM PST

November 29, 2012 Asia, Features, Malaysian Football, News

By Shah Bahari

Co-host Malaysia reacted from their heavy defeat to Causeway rival Singapore last Sunday by demolishing minnows Laos 4-1 in a very highly attacking display by the home side.

Malaysia desperately needed a win to lift the pressure off their back, especially after group rivals Indonesia had beaten three-time champion Singapore 1-0 in the earlier match. Coach K. Rajagobal made several changes to the side that was beaten haplessly in the first game, leaving first-choice goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi, midfielder Amar Rohidan and fullback Bunyamin Umar on the bench. In place are Perak new-singing Farizal Marlias in goal, fullback Mahalli Jasuli and Kelantan's Shakir Shaari. Wan Zack Haikal was also preferred ahead of Khyril Muhymeen.

The match started brightly for the home side, as chief striker Safee Sali had two clear-cut chances in the first 10 minutes, which he failed to finish. The 'Harimau Malaya' finally took the lead in the 15th minute through a beautifully flighted freekick by skipper Safiq Rahim. Johor new signing Norshahrul Idlan were brought down by Laos defender, and from his favourite distance of just outside the box, Safiq send the ball to the top corner.

Malaysia increased the tenacity of the attack and nearly rewarded with another goal, but both Norshahrul and Safee missed their chances. Despite their domination, the home side were silenced with the equalizer by Khonesavanh Sihavong as his strike was deflected in, leaving goalkeeper Farizal Marlias helpless.

The game restarted brightly after the break as Norshahrul nearly scored his first goal of the tournament, but he heads it wide. As Malaysia was totally dominating the centre of the park, the game continues with Safee Sali missing his regular predatory instinct as he scuffled chances after chances. However, in the 68th minute Safee ended his frustration as he coolly chipped the goalkeeper after receiving a neat low cross from the impressive traditional right winger Wan Zack Haikal.

As Laos players looked beat and tired, Harimau Muda's Wan Zack Haikal then register his third international goal, after finishing S. Kunanlan's beautiful cross from the left with a towering header. He has been very impressive on the right flank, and his combination with 'Malaysia's Maicon' Mahalli Jasuli proved to be too much for Laos' left-hand side.

'King Raja' then made few changes, having already introduced Zubir Azmi in place of Azmi Muslim at left back, he then replaced Safee and Norshahrul with Kedah duo Khyrill Muhymeed and Baddrol Bakhtiar. Only a minute after coming on, Khyrill proved his worth as he strides through the Laotian defence to finish with a placed-strike beating goalkeeper Sengphachan Bounthisanh.

The result means the group is thrown wide open as Malaysia is only behind Singapore through goal difference and trailing Indonesia by one point. For Laos meanwhile, they can still mathematically qualify to the semifinal if they manage to beat Singapore in the last group game.

The defending champion Malaysia have everything to do in the final game against Indonesia this Saturday, as they have to beat the Garuda if they are to have any chance of repeating their feat in 2010.

WAN ZACK PEMAIN MUDA TERBAIK LIGA SINGAPURA 2012

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:00 AM PST

Pemain muda negara, Wan Zack Haikal Wan Noor telah menerima pengiktirafan apabila berjaya meraih 2 anugerah dalam Malam Anugerah Great Eastern-YEO'S Liga Singapura 2012 semalam. Pemain berusia 21 tahun yang bermain selaku pemain sayap kanan dalam pasukan Harimau Muda beraksi buat pertama kali selaku pasukan jemputan dalam Liga Singapura 2012.

Wan Zack Haikal berjaya menewaskan Sho Kamimura (Albirex Niigata), Hafiz Abu Sujad (Courts Young Lions), Stefan Milojevic (Geylang United) dan rakan sepasukan Gary Steven Robbat untuk memenangi Anugerah Muda Terbaik YEO'S (YEO'S Young Player of the Year).

Wan Zack Wins Double in Great Eastern-YEO'S S.League Awards ...

Wan Zack Wins Double in Great Eastern-YEO'S S.League Awards Night 2012

SINGAPORE (13 Nov 2012) – His on-field displays may be a thing of poetic beauty, but when asked to speak, it turns out that Wan Zack Haikal is a man of few words.

That did not stop the Harimau Muda winger from becoming the biggest individual winner at the Great Eastern-YEO'S S.League Awards Night 2012 this week when he walked away with the YEO'S People Choice and YEO'S Young Player of the Year awards.

Wan Zack's first season in the S.League has been an impactful one, as he often drove his team on from either flank and earned both the adulation of his fellow Malaysians and the respect of others.

The 21-year-old duly paid tribute to those who have supported him as he spoke of his achievements.

"I am very happy to win these two awards," expressed a grateful Wan Zack.

"Thank you to the fans who voted for me (for the People Choice Award); I could not have won this without the Harimau Muda fans. I don't think there is a lot more I can say!"

Speaking on his feelings on winning the Young Player of the Year crown and his future directions, he revealed pride on the Harimau Muda's achievement for managing fourth place in the S.League.

He added that his focus is now on the Malaysia national team's preparations for the upcoming AFF Suzuki Cup, from which he was granted special permission to leave so that he could come to Singapore for the Awards Night, held this year at ITE College East.

The Great Eastern Player of the Year award went to veteran forward Aleksandar Duric of Tampines Rovers, the third time he has won this prize since doing so in 2007 and 2008.

As Duric is currently in Tokyo with the Singapore national team training for the Suzuki Cup, Stags team manager Zulkarnaen Zainal collected the award on his behalf.

Zulkarnaen revealed that he had a hunch one of the three nominees from his club would win the award, as midfielders Jamil Ali and Ahmad Latiff Khamarudin were also in contention.

"I got a feeling one of them would win; we were 60% there already and we've cornered the market!" he laughed.

"I feel very happy that Aleks won the Player of the Year. If the S.League can provide 3 trophies, I want to give the award to all three of our players!"

Vjeran Simunic, the flamboyant figure guiding Bruneian side DPMM FC, proved true to form as he spoke to the media after receiving his recognition in the form of the MIKASA Coach of the Year award.

"I feel very nice and emotional," remarked the Croatian.

"We bravely targeted making the top five, and the top five teams were all very strong until the last moment. My opinion is we are one of the best teams in the S.League.

"I want to thank especially the Bruneian players in the team, they have shown that people should not look down on Bruneians. Yes, we have import players, but the Bruneian players have done so much of the work for the team to make me win this award."

There were moments of humour at the Awards Night as well, the most memorable of the lot being Norihiro Kawakami's acceptance speech for the Singapore Pools Fair Play Award, which went to Albirex Niigata (Singapore).

Pushed into going on stage by club chairman Daisuke Korenaga, the 25-year-old took much effort to keep a straight face as he read out his speech.

"Thank you, S.League," he said, haltingly.

"Thank you, Singapore. Thank you, Singapore Pools, for this award… And thank you, S.League, again!"

Waga Assistant Referee of the Year winner Eugene Chan gave special mention to his wife in his acceptance speech, noting that it was the first time in five years she was attending the event.

"We have to spend a lot of time training and refereeing, and that means the family's had to make sacrifices in terms of having less time with me," he said, before adding "Thank you."

Quizzed on the spot by Awards Night host Colette Wong about the abuse he has to take from fans while on duty, a cool-looking Chan showed no hard feelings at all.

"We usually try to block the jeers out and make it just part of the noise," he commented.

"But after some time, it has become an inspiration, a motivation for us to keep going. So I should say thank you to the fans!"

The FAS Special Award went to Maniam Murugiah, who was the former deputy chairman of the Referees Committee until he requested to relinquish his position recently.

Mr. Maniam, who has extensive experience in refereeing and referee development, shared his proudest moment in his career.

"It was the day that I got a call from the AFC saying that my referee was selected for the World Cup in 2002. That was the happiest moment for me."

Having spent so much time working for others, Maniam is looking forward to having some time for himself now that he has stepped down from his post.

"What I am going to do is to play golf!" he quipped.

Jakarta Casual: Saarvindran Hopes For More Next Year

Posted: 09 Nov 2012 10:49 PM PST

PETALING JAYA: Versatile D. Saarvindran hopes to get more playing time with Harimau Muda A.

The 20-year-old Klang lad said he is fired up after scoring his first goal in the team's 2-0 win over Geylang United 2-0 in the Singapore League at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday.

"It is a special feeling to score after 11 matches. But I have not been playing regularly and have started only a few times," said Saarvindran yesterday.

Against Geylang United, Saarvindran came in as a second-half substitute and made his presence felt instantly by scoring the second goal from a long range attempt.

Earlier, Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor gave the Malaysian team the lead.

Saarvindran said his aim is to vie for a regular place in the Harimau Muda squad.

"It is not going to be easy with so many talented players around but I will fight for my place and hopefully move up to the national senior team one day."

His team-mate A. Thamil Arasu said that they are on course for a top five finish in the S-League.

"It is good to be tied at the top of the standings with leader's Brunei DPMM FC. It is not easy playing against the other teams as they have foreign players," said Thamil.

Saarvindran and striker Thamil have had training stints in Slovakia. Thamil was also in the SEA Games gold medal team in Jakarta last year.
